Temper is what gets most of us into trouble. Pride is what keeps us there.
A good teacher is one who can understand those not so good at explaining and explain to those not so good at understanding. Temptation is the devil looking through the keyhole; yielding is opening the door and inviting him in. A thermometer doesn't change anything around it; it simply registers the temperature. It is always going up and down. A thermostat regulates the surroundings and changes them when they need to be changed. The apostle Paul was a thermostat. What are we? A humble maid gave this definition to her employer: "You know, Miss Bessie, trouble is so high you can't climb over it, so wide you can't walk around it, so deep you can't dig under it. My way to beat it is to just duck my head and wade right through!" Ulcers are what you get from mountain climbing over mole hills. Doing nothing is the most tiresome job in the world. With that job it is impossible to stop and take a rest. The real measure of a man's wealth is how much he would be worth if he lost all his money. A wedding ring could be called a one-man band. A wedding ring is a tourniquet which is worn on a girl's left hand to stop her circulation. |
A weed is a plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.
"Whines" are the products of sour grapes. Wisdom is the art of knowing what to fight for-- and what to simply overlook. There are three kinds of workers. For example, when a piano must be moved, the first type gets behind and pushes; the second type gives instructions; the third type grabs the piano stool. Worry is what gives small things big shadows. Worry is like a rocking chair-- it gives you something to do, but won't get you anywhere. When the sun goes below the horizon, he is not set, for the heavens glow a full hour after his departure. And when a great and good man dies, the sky of the world is luminous long after he is out of sight. How are we to understand God's wrath? Does God raise His voice... get red in the face... allow his own feelings to cloud His objectivity... and sometimes lose control? The wrath of God is as pure as the holiness of God. When God is angry He is perfectly angry. When He is displeased, there is every reason He should be. We tend to think of anger as sin, but sometimes it is sinful not to be angry. It is unthinkable that God would not be purely and perfectly angry with sin. You are not one person, but three: the one you think you are; the one other people think your are; the one God knows you to be. A youthful figure is what you get when you ask a woman her age. |
