Man is the greatest marvel in the universe. Not because his heart beats 40 million times a year, driving the bloodstream a distance of over 60,000 miles; not because of the wonderful mechanism of eye and ear; not because of his conquest over disease and the lengthening of human life; but because man alone has the capacity to walk and talk with God.
The man of the hour is the man who makes every minute count. Marriage is an educational institution in which a man loses his bachelor's degree without acquiring a master's. Maturity is the ability to rejoice with another who has succeeded when you have failed. Maturity begins when you feel you are right about something without feeling the need to prove someone else wrong. A mature person has faith in himself, but more important, he has faith in God. If you can help someone who needs you, without thinking that your are "a pretty good fellow" for doing so, that is maturity. Meekness is not weakness. Meekness is power under control. Memory is what tells a man his wedding anniversary was yesterday. Middle age is the time when a narrow waist and a broad mind change places. |
The mind is a muscle. It needs to be stretched to stay sharp. It needs to be prodded and pushed to perform. Let it get idle and lazy, and that muscle will become a pitiful mass of flab.
The mind is like a parachute. It functions best when open. My mind is like a sponge. I need to squeeze mine out once in a while and get rid of stuff I don't need anymore. What is a miracle? I know of nothing else but miracles. Every hour of the light and dark is a miracle. Every cubic inch of space is a miracle. Every square yard of the surface of the earth is spread with the same; every foot underground swarms with the same. The sea is a continual miracle. The fishes that swim, the rocks, the motions of the waves, the ships with men in them. What stranger miracles are there? A missionary is simply one beggar telling another where to find bread. A missionary is an ambassador-- one sent to a specific place for a special duty. It isn't necessary for a missionary to go outside of his country, his state, or even his own town. A true missionary needs only to go outside himself. One of the greatest mistakes a man can make is to think he is not going to make any. Money is a peculiar substance which having not, we want; having, we want more; having more, we want still more; and the more we get, the less contented we are. Money is an instrument that can buy you everything but happiness, and can pay your fare to every place but heaven. |
